Abstract

The Oregon State Poultry Association Records document the establishment and functioning of this organization of Oregon poultry breeders and producers during the 1910s.  The Oregon State Poultry Association was established in 1912 as the Oregon Branch of the American Poultry Association.

Scope and Content Notes

The Oregon State Poultry Association Records document the establishment and functioning of this organization of Oregon poultry breeders and producers.  The records are pasted into a book of blank pages and consist of articles of incorporation and by-laws, membership lists, election records, and correspondence.  Topics addressed in the records include resolutions that consumers be informed when they are purchasing eggs imported from China or other country; selection of a representative to attend the annual meeting of the American Poultry Association; and efforts to increase the food supply in Oregon during World War I.  Of special note is correspondence regarding a public event in Portland in November 1917 to encourage residents to raise chickens in their backyards for meat and eggs.

Biographical / Historical Notes

The Oregon Branch of the American Poultry Association was formed in 1912 by members of the American Poultry Association that resided in Oregon.  In 1914, at the request of the American Poultry Association, branches of the national organization were re-organized as separate entities and the Oregon State Poultry Association was established.  E. J. McClanahan, of Eugene, was active in the association from its founding and served as President beginning in 1913.  Several documents from 1917 refer to the organization as the Oregon State Poultry Breeders' Association.
