Abstract

The Gerald W. Williams Slides consist of more than 15,000 35 mm color photographic slides taken and assembled by Williams in the course of his work as a Forest Service sociologist and historian and due to his avocational interest in the history of forestry as a science and profession and the regional history of the Pacific Northwest. The slides were used by Williams in presentations and lectures, for publications, and for reference and research. Many of the slides were made by U.S. Forest Service photographers. Gerald Williams worked for the U.S. Forest Service from 1979 to 2005 as a sociologist (1979-1998) and historian (1998-2005).

Scope and Content Notes

The slides depict a broad range of topics pertaining to forestry, the U.S. Forest Service, and the Pacific Northwest region including Gifford Pinchot and Grey Towers (in Milford, Pennsylvania); Forest Service employees; logging and lumber mills; flora and fauna; Native Americans; and national forests, monuments, and parks. The bulk of the images depict scenes in Oregon and Washington; however, the collection also includes images of California, the southwestern United States, and British Columbia. Within Oregon, several regions in which Williams did research are extensively documented - specifically, the McKenzie River Basin and the Umpqua region.

A substantial portion of the slides are reproductions of late 19th and early 20th century photographs, drawings, and historical documents that Williams used in presentations and publications.

Many of the slides were made by U.S. Forest Service photographers; the photographers' names are included on the mounts of some of these slides.

Broad subjects that were used by Williams to describe the slides stored in metal slide boxes were used as the primary organization of the collection. Many of the slides include descriptive information on the slide mount.

Biographical / Historical Notes

Gerald W. Williams worked for the U.S. Forest Service from 1979 until his retirement in 2005. From 1979 to 1993, he was a sociologist with the Umpqua and Willamette National Forests in Oregon; in 1993-1998, he served as the regional sociologist for the Pacific Northwest Regional Office in Portland; and from 1998 until his retirement in 2005 he was the national historian for the U.S. Forest Service in Washington, D.C. Williams designed and implemented a regional and national history program for the Forest Service which culminated in his appointment as national historian and his authorship of the centennial history of the Forest Service, The USDA Forest Service -- The First Century, in 2000. He has published more than 75 books, chapters, book reviews, and articles and conference papers exploring a variety of historical topics such as the Native American use of fire to manage environments, the Civilian Conservation Corps, and the U.S. Army's Spruce Production Division during World War I.

Williams is a native of Oregon and earned degrees from Southern Oregon University (B.A., Sociology; M.A. General Studies Social Science) and Washington State University (Ph.D., Sociology).

Acquisition Note: These materials were acquired by the former University Archives and the Special Collections and Archives Research Center in multiple accessions in 2007-2016. They were originally described as a component of the Gerald W. Williams Collection (MSS WilliamsG) and were separated for description as this collection in 2016.

Processing Information: Most of these slides were re-housed from 37 metal slide boxes and numerous individual paperboard photo lab slide boxes. A portion of the slides were received in archival slide pages. Broad subject categories on the metal slide boxes were used as the primary organization of the collection; descriptive information on the paperboard boxes was transferred to the slide pages at the time of re-housing.

Series 1: United States Forest Service, 1977-2003

This large series consists of 2826 slides, most of which were made in the 1980s and 1990s. Topics of note in this series are: Gifford Pinchot and Grey Towers (in Milford, Pennsylvania); national forests and wilderness area; the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest; forest service employees; logging and lumber mills; images documenting the history of the U.S. Forest Service. The series includes slides of historic photographs, documents, and other materials from the late 19th century. The initials AKW (for A.K. Wiesendanger) appear regularly on the U.S. Forest Service historic photograph slides.

Series 2: Oregon, 1969-1998

Series 2 consists of 2560 slides of Oregon natural landmarks, scenes, and cities and towns. Of note are images of Eugene, Portland, the Oregon Coast, the Willamette National Forest, Columbia River Gorge, and the Cascades. Several images of Civilian Conservation Corps structures are included.

Series 3: Washington, 1974-1995

Series 3 consists of 1067 slides, primarily of western Washington, including Seattle, Bellingham, and the Olympic Peninsula and the Washington Cascades. Several images of central and southern Washington and the Columbia River basin are included. Photographs of Mount St. Helens after the 1980 eruption are part of this series.

Series 4: California, 1963-1995

Series 4 consists of 433 slides of California scenes and natural features, primarily in northern California and the San Francisco Bay area.

Box-Folder 7.07: California, 1963-1982: 354 slides; slides of Ferndale, Mendocino, San Francisco, Sausalito on the waterfront, Mountain and Lake Shasta, and Tule Lake. Also includes Smith River, Immortal Tree, Eureka and erosion, and Gerry Williams in the Redwood National Park.

Series 5: Umpqua Region, 1969-1990

Series 5 consists of 1451 slides of the Umpqua Basin region including the Umpqua National Forest, towns in the Umpqua Basin, and the Umpqua River. The series includes extensive historical images of this region of Oregon as well as slides of the Santiam Valley and Santiam Pass area.

Slides also show aerials of harvest units, the South Umpqua River, Dorena Lake, New Galesville Dam and Reservoir, and Roseburg's airport.

Box-Folder 8.06: Umpqua Valley, 1978-1984: 169 slides; consists of slides depicting the towns of Roseburg, Yoncalla, Drain, Myrtle Creek, Sutherlin, Oakland, Winchester, Leland and Elkton, as well as other scenic shots from around the Umpqua Valley and Umpqua River. Of particular note are slides of the animals at Wildlife Safari in Winston, Oregon.
Box-Folder 8.07: Umpqua National Forest, 1970-1990: 233 slides; includes images of the Pacific Crest Trail, several mountains in the Cascade Range (notably Mt. Thielsen and Tipsoo Peak), Twin Lakes, Diamond Lake, waterfalls along the North Umpqua Highway, projects from the Civilian Conservation Corps, and flora and fauna from the area.
Box-Folder 8.08: Umpqua National Forest North/South Umpqua Rivers Bohemia Mining District, 1979-1984: 194 slides; consists mostly of landscape shots from around the area including Diamond Lake and the resort, Quartz Mountain, South Umpqua Falls, and Sharps Creek. Many Cascade Range peaks are depicted including Bohemia Mountain, Mt. Thielsen, Mt. Bailey and other a few other peaks. Also included are images of the Cow Creek Indian Powwow.

Series 6: McKenzie River, 1978-1996

Series 6 consists of 984 slides of the McKenzie River and McKenzie Pass region including waterfalls, lakes, and springs; water activities; bridges, towns, and settlements on the McKenzie; and landscape views of the area. Portrait photographs of individual associated with the McKenzie Basin are part of the series.

Also included are images of Belknap Springs Hotel, Foley Springs Hotel, Walterville hops barns (June 1980), the Millican Century Farm at Walterville (October 1978), Creek Canyon, Filbert Orchard in Vida, Fish Hatchery at Leaburg Lake, Gate Creek Ranch in Vida, Lucky Boy Mine, and the Thompson Footbridge. Also included are portraits of Donald McKenzie, Robert A. Booth, Ada and George Millican, Roy Andrews, Raymond Engles, Bud Joy, Smith Taylor, Everett Thompson, Martha and Dorothy Belknap, Superintendent David R. Box-Folder 10.02: Historic McKenzie (2/2), 1979-1990: 185 slides; consists of slides of landscapes including McKenzie Pass, Belknap Craters, Three Sisters, Collier Glacier, Blue River Bridge, Whitebranch Winter, and Box Canyon. Other images include sheep grazing, McKenzie River Baseball Team, camping and fishing photos, Lucky Boy Mine, several lookout stations, and pictures of and advertisements for local businesses.

Series 7: Historic: Oregon and Washington, 1980-1985

Series 7 consists of 227 slides of historical postcards and photographs of Oregon and Washington landscapes as well as individuals associated with the region. Thes seris also includes images of a few documents and maps. The slides were made in the early 1980s of images that were originally taken in the late 19th century through mid-20th century.

Box-Folder 10.03: Historic: Oregon and Washington, 1980-1985: 227 slides; includes slides of historical postcards and photographs in Ashland, Medford, Jacksonville, Coos Bay, Siuslaw, Eugene, Pendleton, Prairie City, Baker City, Tacoma, and Northern California. Landscape images include Crater Lake, Rouge River Falls, Oregon Caves, Odell Lake, Crescent Lake, Deschutes National Forest, Pelican Bay, Olympic Mountains, and the Redwood Forest. Portraits are also included of Steven Meek, Lady Dscharwasha, Peter Britt, Dr. John McLoughlin, Ben Holladay, Binger Herman, Robert H. Booth, and John Mitchell. Other subjects include logging and farm operations, Native American culture, forest reserve maps, and the University of Oregon.

Series 8: Flora and Fauna, 1970-1997

Series 8 consists of 2529 slides depicting flora and fauna, primarily of Oregon, Washington, and the Pacific Northwest. Images of trees, mosses, mushrooms, fungi, lichens, grasses, ferns, shrubs, cactus, and flowers are included. The fauna photographs show insects, amphibians, reptiles, mammals, ducks, geese, swans, and other birds. Images from elsewhere in North America are also included. Lists of the scientific and common names for several of the sets of flora images were received with the images and are mentioned in the folder descriptions below.

Box-Folder 10.04: Trees, 1977-1982: 246 slides; includes slides of leaves, cones, and trees in various stages of development primarily from around Oregon and Northern California, with the Willamette Pass and McKenzie River Area of particular note. A few slides from Texas, Indiana, and Vancouver, B.C. are also included. The tree types photographed include cedar, fir, redwood, juniper, oak, and maple.
Box-Folder 10.05: Mosses, Mushrooms, Fungi, Lichens, Grasses, Ferns, Shrubs and Cactus, 1977-1982: 225 slides; consists of slides of various plant and fungi types throughout Oregon, including the Oakland, Eugene, Cottage Grove, The Dalles, and the areas around the McKenzie, North Umpqua, Rogue, Columbia, and Klamath rivers. Also included are a few slides of cacti in Texas, some ferns from British Columbia, and fungi slides from Indiana. Also included are a few slides of plants from Canada and Indiana.
Box-Folder 11.05: Images of Various Plants and Animals, 1977-1997: 132 slides; consists of slides of images of spiders and insects, birds. sheep and cattle herds and historic images of deer and elk in Oregon and Northern California. Also included are historic images of deer and elk, various plants and flowers in the McKenzie River area and Willamette Valley, and articles and photographs of spotted owls.
Box-Folder 11.06: Insects, Amphibians, and Reptiles, 1972-1981: 152 slides; consists of slides of aquatic life including trout, salmon, turtles, sand dollars, frogs, eels, and alligators in Maine, South Carolina, Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia. Also included are slides of insects and reptiles from Oregon, Indiana, and the Bahamas.
Box-Folder 12.01: Mammals, 1977-1981: 283 slides; includes slides of mammals from all over North America, particularly Oregon, California, Washington, Colorado, Montana, Conecticut, Massachusetts, Wyoming, Texas, Indiana, and Alberta. Animals photographed most notably include big horn sheep, bison, deer, elk, antelope, rodents, and sea lions.
Box-Folder 12.02: Birds at Sun River, 1994: 35 slides; consists of slides of birds at Sunriver including blackbirds, ducks, and eagles. Also included are photographs of a squirrel and children skiing.
Box-Folder 12.03: Birds, 1977-1984: 309 slides; includes slides of birds in Oregon, Washington, Northern California, and a few slides from the Bahamas. Birds photographed include turkeys, owls, woodpeckers, blackbirds, sparrows, eagles, hawks, ospreys, herons, hummingbirds. cranes, cormorants, egrets, pelicans, seagulls, pheasants, quails, and grouse.
Box-Folder 12.04: Ducks, 1973-1982: 253 slides; includes slides of many duck species in Oregon, Washington, Northern California, and British Columbia. Most notably included are mallards, pintails, shovelers, green-winged teals, wood ducks, and ruddy ducks.
Box-Folder 12.05: Geese and Swans, 1970-1984: 209 slides; consists of slides of geese and swans in the Pacific Northwest, most notably Tule Lake, Vancouver, Ashland, and the Lower Klamath area. There are also a few slides of geese and swans in Massachusetts and Connecticut.

Series 9: Cartoons, 1968-2003

Series 9 consists of 844 slides of political cartoons and cartoons pertaining to forestry, fishing, and ranching. Many of the images are of historical items, but more recent cartoons pertaining to environmentalism and global warming, endangered species, and the spotted owl controversy are included.

Box-Folder 13.01: Forest Services Cartoons, 1979-2003: 166 slides; includes slides of cartoons pertaining to forest services including forest fires and prevention, legislative activities, environmentalism, and political views related to clear cutting. Other cartoons included cover the topics of fishing and ranching.
Box-Folder 13.02: Political Cartoons, 1978-1997: 219 slides; consists of slides pertaining to political views on clear cutting, endangered species, and other forestry related issues.
Box-Folder 13.03: Political Cartoons, 1968-1997: 218 slides; consists of slides of historical political cartoons. Main topics include President Theodore Roosevelt, Gifford Pinchot, The Great Depression and Franklin D. Roosevelt, WWII, President Reagan, James Watt, George Bush Sr., Bill Clinton, and forestry related political issues.

Series 10: Presentations and Publications, 1961-1997

Series 10 consists of 474 slides that were created and assembled by Williams for use in presentations and publications. Topics include the history of national forests in the southern United States, the 1980 eruption of Mt. St. Helens, John Waldo, and the U.S. Forest Service.

Box-Folder 13.05: Images used for Presentation: The Beginnings…, 1997: 88 slides; consists of slides used for a presentation given by Gerald Williams entitled " Private Property to Public Property: The Beginnings of the National Forests in the South". Slides depict forests and logging operations as well as maps of the southern United States.
Box-Folder 13.06: Mt. St. Helens Presentation with Script, 1981: 80 slides; consists of slides used for presentation about Mt. Saint Helens. Slides depict the Mt. Saint Helens eruption and aftermath. Complete presentation script included.
Box-Folder 14.01: Images used in Research/Publication of John Waldo Book, 1989: 158 slides; includes images of the Cascade Range, portraits of Waldo, Waldo Lake,and many camp scenes including Odell Lake, Davis Creek, Rigdon Station, Santiam Pass, Deer Camp, and Mt. Hood.
Box-Folder 14.02: Forest Service Images used in Confidential Publication, 1961-1993: 148 slides; includes slides of landscapes, buildings and structures, and flora and fauna in Oregon, Arizona, New Mexico and California. These images were described by the donor as being used in a confidential publication. The title and purpose of the publication is unknown. Many of the phtoographs were made by U.S. Forest Service photographers, including Byron Shumaker and Jim Hughes.

Series 11: General, 1978-2002

Series 11 consists of 1742 slides on a variety of topics. Some of the slides depict Williams' travels and events in which he participated. Images of National Monuments, National Parks, and other notable features are part of the series. Of note are slides of historic images of Native Americans and of logging operations.

Box-Folder 15.08: Yew Environmental Impact Statement Site Visit, 1992: 73 slides; consists of slides of the Yew EIS Site Visit near Cottage Grove and Creswell. Includes images of yew log and bark processing.
Box-Folder 15.09: Organic Act, 1983-1997: 32 slides; includes slides of portraits of Gifford Pinchot, Charles W. Fulton, Binger Hermann, John H. Mitchell. Henry S. Graves, and William Gladstone Steel. Also included are slides of newspaper articles, policy statements, letters. maps and charts pertaining to land distribution and public domain. These document the Forest Service Organic Administration Act of 1897 that provided statuatory basis for management of forest reserves in the United States.
Box-Folder 15.10: Logging Operations: Historic Images, 1979-1997: 106 slides; consists of historic slides of logging operations in Oregon, Washington, Montana and Wisconsin. Includes images of dams, tree felling, log driving, and lumber mills. Of particular note are images of the Cowlitz Stud Co. and Mill Creek Splash Dam.
Box-Folder 15.11: United States Forest Products Lab, 1992: 59 slides; included are slides of both historic and contemporary images of the United States Forest Products Lab in Madison, Wisconsin. Of note, there are images of the lab exterior and buildings and projects on site.
Box-Folder 15.12: General, 1978-1993: 282 slides; consists of slides of historic images -=including landscapes, the U.S. Forest Service, and forest management signs and protocols. Other slides include Oregon wildlife, various landscapes and views from around the United States, and several maps showing National Forest regions in the U.S. Of particular note, included are images pertaining to environmentalism, forest service operations, and disaster response teams.
