Abstract

The Inspiration Dissemination Sound Recordings consist of interviews conducted by the hosts of the Inspiration Dissemination student radio show and broadcast on KBVR-FM. Created in 2012, Inspiration Dissemination is an award-winning weekly program focused on the graduate student experience at Oregon State University. Specifically, the show's hosts speak with current OSU graduate students about their research and their personal journey through graduate school.

The collection is comprised entirely of born digital audio files that are available upon request.

Scope and Content Notes

The Inspiration Dissemination Sound Recordings consist entirely of born digital *.mp3 audio files. Each recording documents an episode of Inspiration Dissemination, as originally created and broadcast on KBVR-FM, Oregon State University's student-run radio station.

The sound recordings held in the collection include raw radio broadcasts, post-produced shows, and shows containing music that was played in the background. Post-produced shows, intended for syndication as podcasts, have been edited with music added. Patron re-use of any shows containing music may be restricted by copyright considerations applicable to a given song.

The collection's digital audio files are available upon request.

Biographical / Historical Notes

Inspiration Dissemination is a weekly talk radio show airing on Oregon State University's student-run campus radio station, KBVR-88.7 FM, Corvallis. First launched in January 2012 and originally hosted by OSU graduate students Zhian Kamvar and Joey Hulbert, the initial intent of Inspiration Dissemination was to inspire undergraduates to continue their studies in graduate school. Over time the program has shifted its focus more squarely on the graduate student experience. Each episode features a different Oregon State graduate student who discusses their research project as well as their inspiration for choosing their research topic, their student experience, their goals while at Oregon State, and their ambitions following graduation.

Zhian Kamvar - or DJ CATGAG as he was known on the air - was a Ph.D. student in botany and plant pathology who completed his studies in 2016. Joey Hulbert, also known as DJ Baby Kangaroo, was a Master of Science student in botany and plant pathology and wood science engineering, who graduated from OSU in 2014 and moved on to Ph.D. studies in South Africa at the University of Pretoria. Kamvar and Hulbert, who met at Oregon State, both had worked in student radio as undergraduates. One of their goals for Inspiration Dissemination was to give their guests an opportunity to explain their research to an audience that was not familiar with their field of study and, in turn, to become more confident in explaining their research to anyone. A secondary objective to the show has been to provide graduate students with experience being interviewed. The show has retained its basic formula for its duration, though over time more emphasis has been placed on guests' personal stories and relatively less time spent on explaining research. In 2014 the show received an award, "Most Innovative Radio Program," at the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System Conference.

Co-hosts in addition to Kamvar and Hulbert have included Chelsea Behymer, a Ph.D. student in environmental science; Grace Deitzler, a Ph.D. student in microbiology; Kayla Delventhal, a M.S. student in botany and plant pathology; Maggie Exton, a Ph.D. student in civil engineering; Kristen Finch, a doctoral student in botany and plant pathology; Heather Forsythe, a Ph.D. student in biochemistry and biophysics; Steven Friedman, a Ph.D. student in biochemistry and biophysics; Jenna Fryer, a Ph.D. student in food science and technology; Adrian Gallo, a master's degree student in sustainable forest management; Lisa Hildebrand, a M.S. student in fisheries and wildlife; Scott Klasek, a Ph.D. student in microbiology; Miriam Lipton, a Ph.D. student in history of science; Bryan Lynn, a Ph.D. student in integrative biology; Lauri Lutes, a master's degree student in botany and plant pathology; Matthew McConnell, a master's degree student in the history of science; Lillian Padgitt-Cobb, a Ph.D. student in biochemistry and biophysics; Selene Ross, an MFA candidate in fiction; Mackenzie Smith, an MFA candidate in creative writing; Harrison Stierwalt, a Ph.D. student in kinesiology; Hannah Stuwe, a Ph.D. student in biochemistry and biophysics; Joseph Valencia, a Ph.D. student in computer science; Matt Vaughan, a Ph.D. student in integrative biology; Daniel Watkins, a Ph.D. student in atmospheric science; and Marcus Weinman, a master's degree student in veterinary medicine.
