Abstract

The Willard C. Potts Papers consist of materials generated and collected by Potts, an OSU English professor and James Joyce scholar. The collection primarily documents Potts' research, instruction and interaction with other Irish studies scholars.

Scope and Content Notes

In addition to correspondence, this collection includes a book, certificates, course materials, employment records, newspaper clippings, notes, photographs, plaques, scrapbooks, speeches, student papers, theater programs, and theses. Among the items reflecting Potts' research include his heavily annonated copy of James Joyce' Ulysses. Comprised of photographs, postcards, ticket stubs, programs, and newspaper clippings, the scrapbooks document Pott's trips to Ireland and England for Joyce symposia and a NICSA study abroad in London program.

Biographical / Historical Notes

Willard Charles Potts joined the OSU English Department as an instructor in 1959. An internationally known scholar on James Joyce, Potts authored the book Joyce and the Two Islands and edited the volume Portraits of the Artist in Exile: Recollections of James Joyce by Europeans. Recognized for his excellence in teaching, Potts received a number of honors throughout his career, including the Elizabeth P. Ritchie Distinguished Professor Award and the Oregon Professor of the Year Award. Potts became professor emeritus in 1995. He died in 2006.
