Biographical / Historical Notes

Arthur Lemuel Albert was born in 1899 in Forest Grove, Oregon. He attended Oregon Agricultural College, receiving bachelor's (1923) and master's (1926) degrees. His area of study was communications engineering and his master's thesis was titled "The Capacitance of High-Voltage Pin-Type Insulators."

In 1923, while a graduate student, Albert was hired by OAC to teach basic courses within the School of Engineering. Thus began a forty-one year tenure of service at Oregon State University that was interrupted only by a wartime stint with the U.S. Naval Radio Training School.

Albert's scholarly interests included transmission engineering, cable capacitance, circuits and the fundamental theory of electrical engineering. He also taught courses in communication engineering and radio, among other topics. He wrote at least eight books, including The Electrical Fundamentals of Communication (McGraw-Hill, 1942), Fundamentals of Telephony (McGraw-Hill, 1943) and Electrical Communication (Wiley, 1950) and was active with the Institute of Radio Engineers, among other professional groups. He retired from OSU in June 1964.
