Abstract

These papers document the career and research activities of John L. Fryer, Microbiology Professor and Department Chairman.

Scope and Content Notes

Research projects conducted and managed by Fryer are the focus of the first series, which contains article reprints, correspondence, grant proposals, memoranda, reports, and research data. The second series pertains to conferences and workshops presented, organized or attended by Fryer and constitutes about half of the volume of his papers. Titles for most of the conferences and workshops are indicated in the inventory for this series, which contains article reprints, abstracts of papers, correspondence, conference programs, presentation notes, and travel itineraries. There are also two posters in this series that were prepared for workshops given by Fryer at a panel discussion on fish disease in Taiwan. The posters contain the titles of the presentations in both English and Chinese. John S. Rohovec, Microbiology Department Professor and researcher from 1977 to 1995, worked with Fryer on a number of research projects relating to salmon viruses.

Included among the subjects covered in Series III, Correspondence, are: international and collaborative research projects, the submission and publication of articles, the American Fisheries Society the Microbiology Department Centennial History book, visits and tours of fish research facilities in Asia, and the Center For Salmon Disease Research. Primarily containing Fryer's published research, the publications consist of article reprints and drafts, conference proceedings, research reports and papers, and a book chapter. Also included in this series are brochures from Japanese fisheries and research facilities collected by Fryer and newspaper clippings. The awards records series relates to awards and honors bestowed upon Fryer by OSU, professional organizations, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture and consists of correspondence, letters of nomination, vita, and newspaper clippings.

Documents relating to salary, promotion, and tenure at OSU and the Oregon Fish Commission comprise the bulk of the employment records series, which also includes lists of Fryer's thesis/doctoral students and performance reviews. The academic records consist primarily of correspondence relating to Fryer's graduate work at OSU.

The Chairman's Notebooks contain memoranda and reports with statistical information regarding student enrollment, equipment, the budget, and the staff of the Microbiology Department. Assembled by Fryer in his first two years as Chair of the Microbiology Department, the notebooks record statistics for two academic years. The photographs, consisting of B&W prints and color prints and negatives, portray Microbiology Department and OSU Fish Disease Laboratory staff members and researchers, Fryer and other participants at various conference and workshops, and portraits of Fryer and his wife, Mary.

Biographical / Historical Notes

John L. Fryer worked for 30 years as a researcher and professor in the OSU Microbiology Department. Born in Fort Worth, Texas, in 1929, John Fryer entered Oregon State University in 1953 to study microbiology and received three degrees (B.S. 1956; M.S. 1957; Ph.D 1964) from the institution. Fryer first worked at OSU from 1957 to 1958 as a Fisheries Biologist in the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife. After leaving the university in 1958 for a job with the Oregon Fish Commission, Fryer returned to OSU five years later, finished his doctoral work, and assumed a post as Assistant Professor in the Department of Microbiology in 1964. Promoted to Professor a few years later, Fryer became Chairman of the Department in 1976 and served in that post until 1996.

Specializing in the study of infectious diseases of salmon, Fryer worked extensively with microbiologists and fish researchers internationally, assisting jointly on projects in Chile, Taiwan, and Korea. For his extensive body of research, Fryer has received a number of honors and awards, including: The Alexander von Humboldt Award, the Carski Distinguished Teaching Award, commendation from the Microbiological Society of Korea, Sigma Xi Research Award, the Japanese Society of Fish Pathology Award of Excellence, Burlingham Distinguished Professor of Agriculture Award, and OSU Personnel Association Boss of the Year. In 1994, Fryer became Professor Emeritus. Fryer was also instrumental in the establishment of the Center for Salmon Disease Research in 1994 and served as its Director until 1999.
