Biographical / Historical Notes

Established in 1985 by José González and Dañel Malán, and based in Portland, Oregon, Milagro (officially known as the Miracle Theatre Group) is the Pacific Northwest’s premier Latino arts and culture organization. In the year prior to co-founding Milagro, González and Malán produced avant-garde performances through their company ARTPAZ. Then, as the Miracle Theatre Group, the company began producing classic Greek plays, and during their 1986-1987 season organized the Ancient Greek Theatre Festival. In 1989 they established the Hispanic Cultural Festival featuring Latino plays as well as local music and dance groups. Over the course of the next few years Milagro organized several more Ancient Greek Theatre Festivals as well as Hispanic Cultural Festivals. In 1992 Milagro transitioned into its current mission to promote the works of Latino artists and feature the stories of the Latino experience.

Milagro’s mission is to “provide extraordinary Latino theatre, culture, and arts education experiences for the enrichment of all communities.” It produces classical and contemporary, Spanish and bilingual, performances through its main stage in Portland and its national touring venture. Milagro Touring (previously known as Teatro Milagro) creates bilingual productions for urban and rural family audiences that explore the traditions of the Latino/a community within the context of current global issues. Milagro’s community outreach endeavors have included educational workshops regarding theatre, music, and dance; youth programs; and collaborations with the community regarding social issues, especially health education.
