Biographical / Historical Notes

Leander Liggett was born on December 23, 1853 in Polk County and resided on the family donation land claim settled by his father Joseph Liggett. In 1866, Joseph was elected Polk County Sheriff and the Liggett family moved to the town of Dallas. Leander enrolled in Corvallis College in 1869 to study agriculture and attended the newly established college until graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1873.

After graduation, Leander worked in Albany as a teacher and bookkeeper. In 1878, he married Catherine E. Cowan and together they raised one child, Florence Ethel, who was born a year later. In 1880, Leander relocated to Crook County (Or.) where he was engaged in a variety of occupations and businesses: livestock management, Prineville school superintendent, mayor of Prineville, and publisher of the Prineville Review newspaper. Active in the political and social communities of Prineville, Leander remained there until his death in 1905.
