Abstract

The August Rauch Collection consists of reference materials pertaining to plywood and veneers assembled by Rauch in the course of his work for the U.S. Plywood Corporation in Lebanon, Oregon, and in Washington. Rauch graduated from Oregon State College in 1942 with a BS in Forestry, specializing in wood products.

Scope and Content Notes

The August Rauch Collection consists of reference materials pertaining to plywood and veneers assembled by Rauch in the course of his work in research and development for the U.S. Plywood Corporation in Lebanon, Oregon, and in Washington. The materials include reprints, publications and reports; conference proceedings and papers; patent information; and related correspondence and research data. The collection includes several reports from the Oregon Forest Products Laboratory, the U.S. Forest Service Forest Products Laboratory in Madison, Wisconsin, and the American Plywoood Association. Reports and correspondence generated by Rauch are interspersed throughout the collection.

Topics addresssed in the collection include testing procedures, specifications and standards, and physical properties of wood; plywood and wood glues; wood fiber; veneer and plywood; hardboard production; medium density fiberboard, continuous pressing fiberboard, and structual particleboard; and sources of wood from southeast Asia and South America.

Biographical / Historical Notes

August Henry (Augy) Rauch attended Oregon Agricultural College from September 1937 through December 1941 and received a BS degree in Forestry, majoring in Wood Products, in June 1942. He completed a senior forestry paper, Pres-to-log Production, in 1941. Rauch worked at the U.S. Plywood Corporation plant in Lebanon, Oregon, in the 1960s and 1970s.

Rauch was born in Echo, Oregon, on August 9, 1919; grew up on his family's farm; and graduated from Pine City High School, in Echo.
