Abstract

The John W. Green Papers consist of materials generated and collected by Green during his career as a civil engineer in bridge design, primarily in California. The materials include reports, publications, notebooks, and numerous photographs. The bulk of the collection documents the construction of the San Francisco - Oakland Bay Bridge in the 1930s. Green earned a BS in Civil Engineering from Oregon Agricultural College in 1916.

Scope and Content Notes

The John W. Green Papers consist of materials created and assembled by Green during his civil engineering career in bridge design and include reports and publications; engineering organization directories; design information, calculations, and drawings; and two photograph albums and individual photographic prints. The bulk of the collection documents the design and construction of the San Francisco - Oakland Bay Bridge, including numerous photographs, some of which were taken by B.W. Hellings Photography of San Francisco.

The photographs also include images of completed bridges in Oregon, Washington, Utah, and elsewhere in California. Materials pertaining to Green's work for the New Cornelia Copper Company and reports by the California State Division of Highways on bridge projects in San Diego and Los Angeles, California are also part of the collection.

Biographical / Historical Notes

John Wesley Green earned a BS in Civil Engineering at Oregon Agricultural College in 1916. After graduation he worked for the U.S. Geological Survey; the New Cornelia Copper Company in Ajo, Arizona; and the Washington Department of Highways. In 1927, he became an Associate Highway Bridge Engineer with the U.S. Bureau of Public Roads in San Francisco, California. From 1930 until 1939, he was Assistant Engineer of Design for the San Francisco - Oakland Bay Bridge where he conducted preliminary studies and final design of sub-structure and approaches. From 1939 until his retirement in 1960, Green was Senior and Supervising Bridge Engineer for the California Division of Highways in southern California.
