Abstract

The Berny Wagner Scrapbooks document the Oregon State University men's track and field teams coached by Wagner from 1966 through 1975.

Items from this collection have been digitized and are available in Oregon Digital.

Scope and Content Notes

The Berny Wagner Scrapbooks contain newspaper clippings and magazine articles documenting Wagner's tenure as coach of Oregon State University's men's track and field team for the 1966 through 1975 seasons. The scrapbooks highlight many of OSU's track and field standouts from that time, such as 1968 Olympic gold medal winner Dick Fosbury and All-Americans Jim Barkley, Steve DeAutremont, Willie Turner, Tom Woods, Jim Judd, Hailu Ebba, and Ed Lipscomb.

An addition to the Wagner Scrapbooks (Accession 2006:033) consists of photographs (numbering 218 prints in total) collected and taken by Berny Wagner of student athletes on the OSU Track and Field and Cross Country Teams. In addition to group shots of the teams, the images in this transfer also depict the athletes in active competition at meets, Wagner and the other OSU Track and Field coaches, Dick Fosbury at the 1968 Olympics, and the construction of the Valley Track Facility. Among the various events represented in these photos include: the discus throw, middle-distance running, javelin throw, high jump, intermediate hurdles, pole vaunting, sprinting, shot put, triple jump, and cross country running.

A second addition to the Berny Wagner Scrapbooks (Accession 2012:061) is made up of materials collected by OSU Track and Field Coach Carl "Berny" Wagner and includes certificates, correspondence, game programs, invitations, magazines, nametags, newsletters, newspaper clippings, a parking pass, photographs, sports media guides, teaching materials, and a workout diary. In addition to documenting Wagner's career in OSU athletics, these items also reflect his coaching career at the College of San Mateo, work as a high school physical education teacher, participation in track meets, and military service during World War II. Numbering 97 prints in total, the photographs include shots of Wagner with Olympic athlete and OSU track star Dick Fosbury as well as posed in group portraits with other teams that he coached such as the College of San Mateo, Western Oregon University, and The Athletic Congress. Wagner's original arrangement of these items by decade (1960's, 1970's, etc.) has been retained with the exception of the photographs, which have been described separately by subject areas such as OSU Track and Field, various track invitationals/clinics, and Wagner's coaching work outside of OSU.

Items from this collection have been digitized and are available in Oregon Digital.

Biographical / Historical Notes
