Tradition plays a major role in commencement at most colleges and universities. Some traditions continue year after year without change, while others make way for new ones. At Oregon State, for example, graduates still receive their own diplomas during commencement, a practice most universities have done away with. On the other hand, OSU held its undergraduate commencement outdoors in 2001, ending more than a century of indoor ceremonies.
