Melanie Nichol Oral History Interview

Description

In this interview, Melanie Nichol discusses a variety of experiences, beginning with her early childhood as one of six children born to her parents in Shaw, Oregon. She goes into detail about her family's history in Oregon and their journey there from Oklahoma. Nichol also discusses her parents' ideas of success, which include getting a good salaried job, and the values that she began to develop as an adult that center more around education and learning. She notes that her first job came early; at fifteen years old she accepted a job in fast food, followed by waitressing and then, at nineteen, she began working as a prison guard, despite the fact that the age requirement for that job was 21. During this time, she began think hard about the ideas of "good" and "evil," and the fact that those concepts are not as clear cut as she had originally thought.

During this time, Nichol attended community college sporadically until eventually she settled on a track for Spanish. She eventually transferred to Western Oregon University and earned a degree in Spanish. From there she completed a degree at Oregon State University in Biocultural Anthropology. At the time of this interview, she was working on a master's degree in biocultural applied anthropology at Oregon State.

In the interview, Nichol also discussess her memories of conducting research in Cuba, how that led to her to meet her future husband, and how her experiences in Cuba differed from her husband's experiences in the US.

The interview ended abruptly due to unforeseen circumstances.
