Mrs. Ellen A. Fry Emergency Committee of Atomic Scientists 90 Nassau Street Princeton, New Jersey
Pear Mrs. Fry:
Charlottesville and Albemarle County are planning a community-wide Atomic Energy Week from May 11th to May 18th. The Secretary of the Chamber of Commerce is chairman and all local civic organizations are being asked to participate. In a vacant store on Main Street we plan four times daily showings of 16 mm movies such as "One World or None", "Operaticn Crossroads", etc. with a brief talk by a team of local citizens and University of Virginia students on the political implications of atomic energy. An Institute will be held during the week when scientists and members of the faculty of the Woodrow Wilson School of Foreign Affairs will speak and guide a discussion. The schools, radio, press, libraries, and churches have been asked to participate.
We feel that it is important for the "little man" to face up to a world made new by atomic energy. It is our purpose to show him a bit of the background of international cooperation, the potentialities for good and evil in atomic energy, how it maybe properly controlled, and what is the alternative to such control.
The National Committee on Atomic Information in Washington have been extremely helpful in supplying information and suggestions. If we decide to undertake a public opinion poll, they will send some one from the office to handle it.
