history

Ne-Rl 3610 Granada Street Tampa 6, Florida April 8, 1947 Dr. Albert Einstein, Chairman Emergency Committee of Atomic Scientists % Science Illustrated Broadway and 11th Street Louisville, Kentucky Dear Dr. Einstein: In the January, 1947, issue of Science Illustrated I read of the group of eight scientists who have organized the Emergency Committee of Atomic Scientists with you as the chairman. I understand that the purpose of your committee is to launch a campaign of education that will arouse the country to the imminent danger of atomic warfare and to the need of world-wide control. June 2, 1947, I will have a chance to help your campaign as I have been chosen to deliver a speech on this subject at my high school graduation exrcises. These ceremonies usually attract about a thousand or more people, and I will have a great opportunity to help inform the public on this vital subject. My purpose in writing you is to ask your help and advice, as I know that you have long experience in talking on this subject and that you are interested in advancing the knowledge of the American people. If you have any information or advice that would aid me in preparing my speech, I would sincerely appreciate it if you would send it to me as soon as possible. I understand the basic principles of atomic energy, but I do not know how to go about speaking publicly on this subject due to the lack of knowledge that the average person has of atomic energy. Any information or advice transmitted to me will be put to the best use possible. Respectfully yours, [signature] Charles L. Miller
