Dr. Albert Einstein 1012 Mercer Street Princeton, N.J.
My dear Dr. Einstein:
I had the pleasure of meeting you at your home near Berlin, twenty-two or twenty-three years ago. Arnold Zweig, with whom my sister was associated then, brought me to your home. I was a youngster then and did not know that exile was in the cards for so many of us.
I am planning a series of broadcasts for Warner Brothers Station K.F.W.B. in Hollywood, which will begin on January 1, 1947, and which is intended to assist in raising money for the educational fund of the Emergency Committee of Atomic Scientists.
I am in touch with J.H. Rush of the Federation of American Scientists in Washington, with Joseph H. Schaffner, Executive Director of E.C.A.S, and with Mr. Harold L. Oram, Campaign Director of E.C.A.S., all of whom are cooperating. I am also working with the local scientists, and am in correspondence with some of the scientists organized at Berkeley.
Mr. Oram and Clark Eicrhelberger will be in Los Angeles some time in January to arrange for an affair similar o the one held at Princeton on November 17th, where $100,000.00 was raised for the educational fund. Our programs will be geared to assist in this affair. Furthermore, in all of these programs, we will appeal for contribution to the Emergency Committee's fund.
I wonder, Dr. Einstein, whether you would be good enough to send me a statement which could be used in the first broadcast of January 1, 1947. The statement should contain, first, an explanation why the atomic scientists feel the need for their education campaign, and an appeal to the general public to contribute.
These programs are planned considerably in advance of the actual broadcast, and I would appreciate an early reply. A self-addressed envelope is enclosed for your convenience.
Thanking you in advance for your kind assistance and cooperation I am
Very sincerely yours, /s/ Joseph Roos Joseph Roos Research Director
