Susan Gilmont Oral History Interview
Description
Gilmont begins her interview by sharing details about her youth in Toledo, Oregon, the careers of her parents, and her childhood interests. She talks about her high school career and the authors and activities she was interested in during this time. She also discusses her years after high school, her sporadic college attendance, and her early work for OSU's Kerr Library.
Gilmont then discusses her path to working at the Hatfield Marine Science Center Library, and describes the difference in environments between the two OSU libraries. She likewise delves into the reasons why she put her education on hold for just over a decade, and what she wishes she could have done differently with her studies. She speaks of working with library directors Marilyn Potts Guin and Janet Webster, and the different approaches they took to leadership. She also describes challenges and fears she dealt with in the early years of her career at the Guin Library, and a few projects in which we engaged during that period.
