Scope and Content Notes

The Robert Daly Beer Publication Collection is comprised of publications collected by Robert Daly about brewing, as well as guides to different varieties of beer found in the U.S. and worldwide. Included among the publications are several issues of the Oregon Brew Crew newsletter, which Daly edited.

There are 26 books about homebrewing, tasting, and styles in this collection, including books written by beer writer Michael Jackson and Charlie Papazian. Notable is a 1995 pamplet entitled Basic Homebrewing by Jim Wearne, a 1995 Beer Taster’s Log by James D. Robertson with a foreword written by Fred Eckhardt, and several books focusing on international beers.

Daly wrote and edited the Oregon Brew Crew (OBC) newsletters in 1998, and in addition to club news, several articles focus on the Oregon State University Fermentation Science program. The collection includes an article written by Daly on Bulgarian beers that appeared in a student newspaper, as well as newspaper clippings focusing on the Portland homebrewing scene are also part of the collection.

Biographical / Historical Notes

Robert Daly lives in Portland and is a reitred Journalism and Mass Communications professor. He was a visiting professor at American University Bulgaria in the mid-1990s. Personally, he became interested in beer styles on his first trip to Europe, but his interest never led him to brewing professionally. Though he was never a brewer, Daly traveled extensively and collected both beer knowledge and books. Daly is a longtime member of the Oregon Brew Crew, a home brewing club based in the Portland area.

Founded in 1979, the Oregon Brew Crew is one of the oldest and largest homebrew clubs in the country. This group is passionate about volunteerism, giving back to their community, and educating homebrewers so that they can take the next step and become professional brewers. The Oregon Brew Crew is an unique blend of hobbyists, professional brewers, and craft beer pioneers.
