Abstract

The Geosciences Department Records contain biographical files maintained by the department as well as correspondence generated by Geology Professor William H. Taubeneck.

Scope and Content Notes

Accession 2002:038 consists of Geology Professor William H. Taubeneck's correspondance. Included among the subjects addressed in the records are: the Oregon State Board of Higher Education's response to student protest and unrest on campus, spatial needs of the Geology Department, the construction of the Earth Sciences building, and the recruitment of students and faculty to the department. Coming to OSU in 1951 to teach in the Geology Department as an Instructor, William Taubeneck was promoted to Professor in 1965. He became Professor Emeritus in 1983.

Accession 2006:037 is made up of faculty biographical files generated and maintained by the Geosciences Department documenting Geoscience faculty research projects, instruction, outside hobbies, and mortality. The files include correspondence, curriculum vitae, grant proposals, newspaper clippings, photographs, reports, and seminar flyers. Also included in this transfer are correspondence and reports pertaining to long-range department planning, guidelines for managing budget/program reductions, the international activity of Geoscience faculty, and the merger of the Geology and Geography Departments that formed the Geosciences Department in 1989.

Biographical / Historical Notes

The collection predates the merger of the Geology and Geography Departments, which formed the Geosciences Department in 1989.

In 2011, the geosciences program joined the College of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences, which allowed the college to focus on the Earth as an integrated system.  The college referred to this as the “whole earth” approach, which looks at both terrestrial environments and ecology, and how they interact with oceans and the atmosphere.  The College was then renamed the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences.

Internationally known as a leader in the study of the Earth, research at OSU ranges from coastal ocean dynamics and ocean ecosystems, to the study of undersea volcanoes and plate tectonics, to how changes in the continents affected ancient climates.
