The Leslie Carraway and B. J. Verts Papers consist of materials generated and collected by OSU Fisheries and Wildlife faculty Leslie Carraway and B. J. Verts that pertain to their research and publication activities. Made up of article reprints, books, correspondence, maps, notebooks, photographs, reports, research data, and theses, much of the documentation in this collection reflects the research and graphical work involved in publishing the book Land Mammals of Oregon. Records about specific research projects in these papers contain of a combination of data, article drafts, correspondence, maps, and notes.

Although the general focus of this research is oriented toward shrews, there are also studies of other mammals such as raccoons, bunnies, and deer. Depicting mammals in complete form and in smaller segments like skull studies, the illustrations and photographs were primarily created for use in the Mammals book. A number of the illustrations are original line drawings by Chris Wall and Verts. Numbering about 1,500 photographs in total (750 prints, 250 negatives, and 500 slides), the images predominantly depict mammals but also include shots of Oregon landscapes such as the Pueblo Mountains and slide presentations prepared by Carraway.

Leslie Carraway began her career at OSU in 1979 as an research assistant in the Zoology Department and then transferred to the Fisheries and Wildlife Department a year later, continuing her work. Earning a doctorate in fisheries and wildlife from OSU in 1989, Carraway's research focus has been the study of the taxonomy and ecomorphology of the western shrew. Carraway's most recent research has focused on the study of shrews in Mexico.

B. J. Verts came to OSU in 1965 to serve as a Professor of Wildlife Sciences after working as a mammalogist with the Illinois Natural History Survey for eight years. An active researcher specializing in the study of the ecology and history of Oregon mammals, Verts published 104 scientific papers and three books. Much of this research and publication was done in collaboration with his wife and fellow OSU wildlife sciences professor Leslie Carraway, whom he married in 1979. Upon reaching emeritus status after thirty-two years as a professor at OSU, Verts continued to spend another five years mentoring undergraduates and teaching courses in manuscript preparation. He died in 2011.
