Abstract

The Herman A. Scullen Papers consist of records generated by entomologist Herman Scullen pertaining mainly to his research on wasps.

Scope and Content Notes

The collection includes records primarily pertaining to Scullen's research on wasps with about half of the materials consisting of correspondence with entomologists and other researchers in Latin America, Europe, and Africa. Along with correspondence, the collection includes article reprints, publications, and research notes and data.

Biographical / Historical Notes

Born in Wisconsin in 1887, Herman A. Scullen came to OAC in 1920 to serve as an Instructor in Beekeeping for the Entomology Department. By 1935 Scullen had earned a doctorate in Entomology from Iowa State University while continuing to teach at OSC. Renowned as a world authority on the wasp genus Cercerini, Scullen collected specimens on field trips through Mexico, Central America, and Europe. Remaining active in the field after attaining his emeritus status in 1953, Scullen died in 1981.
