Abstract

The Kappa Sigma Nu Fraternity Records consist of a record book, newsletters, informational reports, letters, and a warranty deed documenting the membership and activities of the Kappa Sigma Nu Fraternity at Oregon Agricultural College. Established in 1906, the Kappa Sigma Nu Fraternity became chartered as a chapter of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity in 1918.

Scope and Content Notes

The Kappa Sigma Nu Fraternity Records consist of a record book, newsletters, informational reports, letters, and a warranty deed documenting the membership and activities of the Kappa Sigma Nu Fraternity at Oregon Agricultural College.

The record book contains entries made by KSN members A. Johnson and Lyle Hendricks that describe the fraternity's membership, social events, house guests, athletic contests, relations with other Greek groups, and the membership pledge. The years reflected in the book span the fraternity's founding in 1906 to 1911. A typed transcript of the record book is also part of this collection.

The newsletters are made up of five issues of the Kappa Sigma Nu Fraternity Star newsletter. The informational reports date from 1915 to 1917 and contain information on the academic standing of KSN members as well as other details about the fraternity. These reports were prepared to serve as petitions for the establishment of a chapter of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity at OAC. The letters reflect interaction with the KSN Alumni Association in Portland.

The warranty deed documents a 1955 property transaction between B.D. and Bessie Lamar and the Kappa Sigma Nu Association.

Biographical / Historical Notes

Formed as a local fraternity in 1906, Kappa Sigma Nu (KSN) was the third fraternity to be established at Oregon State University and the first to have their own house. In 1918, KSN dissolved to become the Oregon Beta chapter of the Phi Delta Theta International order.
