Abstract

The Alumni Relations Photographs consist of images documenting campus buildings, class reunions, campus events and milestones, athletic contests, items made by students in Industrial Arts classes and scenic Oregon landscapes.

Images from this collection have been digitized and are available in Oregon Digital.

Scope and Content Notes

The collection includes photos taken by individuals including Robert Henderson, Gene Kenney (Oregon Highway Travel Bureau), George Criteser, and W.F. McCulloch. Among the events depicted in these images are the construction of the OSU Radiation Center, a University Theatre production, and a parade honoring the centennial of OSU in 1968. A roll of 35mm negative film found in its original plastic case has been kept with these images. Negatives correspond to prints documenting class reunion activities. Also included are slide presentation scripts and notes from Robert Henderson and "Scram" Graham.

Accession 2004:048 includes class group shots as well as depictions of alumni receiving honors, socializing, and giving speeches at reunions. Graduates ranging from the class of 1914 to 1977 are featured in these images, with a few of the alumni identified by name.

Accession 2014:107 is made up of 100 photographic prints documenting a reunion event held in honor of OSU football coach Dee Andros. The images depict Andros, players from his teams, and other athletic coaching staff mingling at the reunion and speaking to the crowd. In addition to Andros, others featured in these images include: Jerry Pettibone, Dutch Baughman, Jim Walker, Bruce Kannenberg, Dave Graham, Steve Bielenberg, Ken McGrew, Bud Riley, and Jean Eggers.

We acknowledge that materials in SCARC collections and the language that describes them may be harmful. We are actively working to address our descriptive practices; for more information please see our SCARC Anti-Racist Actions Statement online.

The archivist-prepared description of this collection uses the phrase “Civil War” to refer to the long-standing athletic rivalry between Oregon State University and the University of Oregon. A history of this athletic rivalry, and use of the phrase “Civil War” to describe it, is available online in The Origins of the "Civil War" Football Game blog post.

In June 2020, Oregon State University President Edward J. Ray announced that the term  “Civil War” will no longer be used by either university because it “represents a connection to a war fought to perpetuate slavery.”

We acknowledge the racism represented by the use of this phrase and the harm it may cause our users. In order to provide historical context and to enable standardized searching and access across our collections, we have retained the use of this phrase in the collection description.
