Biographical / Historical Notes

The Pacific Cooperative Poultry Producers was founded in 1920, and the Oregon Poultrymen’s Association was founded in January 1924.  A decade later there remained a need to organize and combine allied branches of the poultry industry, plus the Oregon Department of Agriculture and, what was then, Oregon State College.

In 1936, the Oregon Baby Chick Association, Oregon Poultry Improvement Association, Oregon Turkey Cooperatives, Oregon Food Dealers Association, Oregon Poultry and Pet Stock Association, Oregon Standard Breeders Association, Washington County Poultry Council, Portland Terminal Feed Manufacturers, Oregon Poultry Service Club, and Portland Produce Exchange joined the Pacific Cooperative Poultry Producers and the Oregon Poultrymen’s Association as voting members of the new Oregon Poultry Council, which was incorporated on April 26, 1937.  The Oregon Department of Agriculture and OSC were associate members.

By holding semi-annual meetings, the Council’s goal was to organize farmers for action and create opportunities for learning and growth in areas concerning poultry farmers.  For example: Egg grading and hatching success rates; poultry Breeding; Disease and mortality; Promotion of the industry and special interest groups; and Statements on bills and measures in Oregon legislature.  They also solicited applications for induction into the Oregon Poultry Hall of Fame at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry.
