Abstract

The Warren C. Wilson Western Alpines Project Lantern Slides consist of photographs made by Wilson during a 1936 alpine plant collecting trip in Colorado and Washington. Wilson graduated from Cornell University and was a plant propagator and nursery owner in Maplewood, Oregon, specializing in alpine flora.

Scope and Content Notes

The Warren C. Wilson Western Alpines Project Lantern Slides consist of 9 lantern slides of photographs made by Wilson during a western alpine flora collecting trip in 1936. The slides depict the Mount Baker and Mount Shuksan areas in the North Cascades of Washington, Mount Rainier, Jasper National Park in Alberta, and the Portland (Oregon) Airport on Swan Island. An offprint of the article "Collecting Western Alpines by Air", written by Wilson and published in The National Horticultural Magazine, provides details of the collecting trip and is also part of the collection. One of the photographs of Mount Rainer is published in the article. The other slides are annotated with references to page numbers in the article.

Biographical / Historical Notes

Warren C. Wilson graduated from Cornell University in 1938 where he worked as an assistant in the Department of Floriculture and Ornamental Horticulture. In 1940 Wilson married Genevieve Swiderski and the couple settled in Portland, Oregon. At that time, Wilson worked as a propagator in the William Borsch and Sons Nursery. Wilson owned the Saxton and Wilson Nursery (successor of Borsch and Sons) in Maplewood, Oregon, from the 1940s to 1990s. Saxton and Wilson specialized in alpines (plants that grow primarily above tree line) and rock garden perennials.
