Abstract

The Dennis Barstow Photographs consist of color slides taken by Barstow of oceanographic research conducted on Oregon State University research vessels. Dennis Barstow joined the Oregon State University Oceanography Department in 1962 as a research assistant. He served as a hydrographic technician on a number of research projects and retired in 1994.

Scope and Content Notes

The Dennis Barstow Photographs consist of color slides taken by Barstow of oceanographic research conducted on Oregon State University research vessels. The images depict Oregon State University faculty, students, and researchers as well the research vessels. Images of the R/V Acona, Yaquina, Paiute, Cayuse, and Wecoma are included. Several photographs of the Totem buoy project are part of the collection. Faculty and students depicted in the photographs include Adriana (Jane) Huyer, Jay Simpkins, Chris Moser, Rich Schramm, Dennis Root, George Morrison, Cliff Williams, Bob Still, Kathryn Brooksforce, and Jack Query.

Jane Huyer produced high-resolution scans of the slides, confirmed dates, and prepared caption information for all the images. The collection also includes these high-resolution digital files as well as a document with background information for the collection as well as the images and captions.

Biographical / Historical Notes

Dennis Barstow joined the Oregon State University Department of Oceanography as a research assistant in 1962 and retired from the Oregon State University (OSU) College of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences in 1994. Barstow served as a hydrographic technician on several major projects including TENOC (Ten Years of Oceanography), CUEA (Coastal Upwelling Ecosystems Analysis), CODE (Coastal Ocean Dynamics Experiment), and SuperCODE (a large-scale west coast shelf experiment). He later joined the OSU buoy group, specializing in the calibration of temperature sensors. He frequently went to sea on oceanographic research vessels, especially on OSU's R/V Acona, Yaquina, Cayuse, and Wecoma, as well as vessels operated by other institutions.
