Abstract

The Neil Armantrout Papers consist of materials generated and collected by alumnus Neil Armantrout in the course of his dissertation research on fisheries in Iran and his work as a fishery biologist for the Bureau of Land Management in Oregon and Utah.

Scope and Content Notes

In addition to a bound copy of Armantrout's doctoral thesis and several drafts, the papers include article reprints, correspondence, grant proposals, newspaper clippings, photographs, publications, reports, and student papers. Materials related to OSU include undergraduate student papers and correspondence regarding admission to Graduate School. The photographs, which number 584 images (181 prints and 403 negatives) in total, depict various identified and unidentified fish specimens.

Some of the research articles in this collection are photocopies printed from sources older than the inclusive dates mentioned above (oldest materials date back to 1843) and are in a variety of languages other than English (Farsi, Russian, German, French, and Italian.)

Biographical / Historical Notes

Born in 1941, Neil Armantrout received undergraduate and graduate degrees from OSU in Zoology, General Science, and Fisheries Biology. After a brief stint with the Washington State Department of Fisheries, Armantrout served two years with the Peace Corps in Iran from 1965-1967, where he taught English and biology courses at Pahlavi University. After his involvement with the Peace Corps, Armantrout began to compile information for the Iranian Game and Fish Department on local fish species, a project that he turned into a doctoral dissertation completed in 1981. Armantrout also taught at the University of Tabriz in Iran from 1973-1974. When he returned to the U.S. in 1975, Armantrout worked as a fishery biologist with the Bureau of Land Management in Utah and Oregon. He died in 2003.
