Scope and Content Notes

The Waldo Hall Scrapbooks consists of two scrapbooks documenting the residents and activities of this women's dormitory at Oregon State College. One of the scrapbooks is for the 1947-1948 academic year and the other documents the 50th anniversary celebration of Waldo Hall in 1957-1958. The 1947-1948 scrapbook consists primarily of newspaper clippings about Waldo Hall residents and their honors and activities. It also includes several dance cards. A group photograph of the residents on the front lawn of Waldo Hall is also included.

The 1957-1958 scrapbook also consists primarily of newspaper clippings. It includes a brochure about the 50th anniversary, an article published in the Oregon Stater alumni magazine about the anniversary, and the names of residents during the 1957-1958 year. Group photographs of couples at the fall 1957 dorm dance and the 1958 spring term dance (with the theme "Easy Street") are part of the scrapbook.

A folder of newspaper clippings from 1952 about Waldo Hall activities and residents is also included in the collection.

Biographical / Historical Notes

Designed by Charles H. Burgraff, Waldo Hall was completed in 1907 as a women's dormitory. It originally had 115 rooms and could accomodate up to 300 women residents. It was named in honor of Dr. Clara Humason Waldo, an Oregon Agricultural College Regent from 1905 to 1919. In 1959, after completion of adjacent Snell Hall as a new women's dormitory, Waldo Hall became a men's dormitory. It continued to be used for student housing until 1965. The 50th anniversary of Waldo Hall was celebrated during the 1957-1958 academic year. During its first 50 years, more than 12,000 Oregon State College women students lived in Waldo Hall.

The Voices of Oregon State University Oral History Collection (OH 009) includes an interview with a 1956 resident of Waldo Hall. The Special Collections and Archives Research Center photograph collections include many images of Waldo Hall, especially in Harriet's Photograph Collection (P HC) and the Buildings Photographic Collection (P 016).

The Dean of Women's Office Records (RG 057) document student programs for women at Oregon State.
