Abstract

The James A. Harper Papers consist of publications by Harper, as well as research records from the W-7 regional project and successor projects on turkey breeding and reproduction.

Scope and Content Notes

This collection includes KOAC radio presentations, general reference files pertaining to the turkey industry and turkey research, students' papers and theses, and color slides taken of and used in turkey research and teaching programs. The research records include proposals, reports, notes, bulletins from OSU and other states' experiment stations, journal reprints, correspondence, and two films.

An addition to the Harper Papers (Accession 098:098) consists of two series. Series 1 consists of research records from the W-7 regional project and successor projects on turkey breeding and reproduction and includes proposals, reports, correspondence, and 2 motion picture films. Series 2 consists of two sets of informational files on turkey production and includes notes, bulletins from OSU and other states' experiment stations, journal reprints, and other materials.

Biographical / Historical Notes

James Arthur Harper was born on November 18, 1916, in Delemar, Idaho to Julia and Philip Harper.

He earned a bachelors from Oregon State College  in 1940, and a masters from Pennsylvania State in 1942.  Harper had two years of teaching experience before starting as a Research Assistant at Oregon State in 1942.  As a faculty member in Poultry Husbandry, he focused on turkey research.  Specifically teaching turkey management and reproduction, and the marketing of poultry products.

Harper married Mariellen McCracken, September 1942 in Benton County, Oregon.

He died in Corvallis on August 31, 2019.
