Abstract

The Mike Club Scrapbook and Sound Recordings document the Club's activities and programs, including radio and television broadcasts produced by Oregon State students. The Mike Club was established in 1948 and offered opportunities for Oregon State students to gain experience in radio and television production and broadcasting.

Scope and Content Notes

The Mike Club Scrapbook and Sound Recordings document the club's programs and activities, including radio and television broadcasts. The scrapbook was assembled by Harold Livingston, a faculty member in the Oregon State Speech Department, and includes clippings, a brief draft history of the club, a brochure for the 25th anniversary of KOAC in 1947, and a report of the club's activities in 1960-1961. Items that were not affixed in the scrapbook are housed in separate folders.

The sound recordings are a Time Capsule of notable or outstanding campus events during the 1952-1953 academic year. The recordings were made by the Mike Club, which planned to seal the recordings and have them played over the radio after 25 years. The recordings consist of 2 reel-to-reel audiotapes.

Biographical / Historical Notes

The Mike Club was established by the Speech Department at Oregon State College in 1948. The club was responsible for a half-hour radio program that originated at the KOAC radio station and was re-broadcast by KEX in Portland. In 1955-1956, the club created a recording, Oregon State's Year in Sound, that was distributed as part of the 1956 Beaver yearbook and is available online. When closed-circuit television came to the Oregon State campus in 1955, the club became the Telemike Club and presented its first television drama in 1958.

The organization was referred to as the Mike Club, Microphone Club, and Telemike Club.
