Abstract

The Les Lloyd Papers consist of correspondence and related materials received by Lloyd from George Peavy, former Dean of the School of Forestry at Oregon State College. Leslie Darvel Lloyd graduated from Oregon State in 1929 with a BS in Technical Forestry.

Scope and Content Notes

The Les Lloyd Papers consist predominantly of correspondence and related materials, such as newspaper clippings, received by Lloyd from George Peavy. The correspondence pertains to the School of Forestry, alumni, Peavy's activities during retirement, and foresty and logging topics. Most of the letters were handwritten by Peavy. Some of the correspondence pertains to the 1948 Rose Bowl football game between the University of Southern California and the University of Michigan; the collection also includes a program for this game. Lloyd and several other forestry alumni made arrangements for Peavy to attend the game.

The papers also include the constitution and by-laws for the Oregon State College Forestry Alumni Association, meeting minutes for the Association, and an issue of the Fernhopper Newsletter for Summer 1946. Several items written by Earl G. Mason, Dean of the School of Forestry in 1936-1942, are also included. The photograph depicts Peavy with the car that he received as a gift from forestry alumni in 1947.

Leslie Darvel Lloyd, of Portland, Oregon, graduated from Oregon State College in 1929 with a BS degree in Technical Forestry. He completed a master's degree in tropical forestry at the University of Michigan and had many international assignments advising and assisting in forest management in Central and South America, Asia, and Europe. From 1937 to 1941, he was the forester for the Hawley Pulp and Paper Company. As a student, Lloyd was chairman of the first Fernhopper Day, an annual event for forestry alumni.

From 1932 until his retirement in 1940, he served as Acting President (1932-1934) and President (1934-1940). In 1947, Peavy was elected mayor of Corvallis, Oregon, and served in that capacity until his death in 1951. Peavy was also a graduate of the University of Michigan.
