Abstract

The Crop Science Club Records document the membership, programs, and activities of the Crop Science Club at Oregon State University. The Crop Science Club was established at Oregon State in 1955.

Scope and Content Notes

The Crop Science Club Records document the organization's programs and activities including field trips, picnics, Dad's Weekend activities, corn sales, athletic contests with Crop Science faculty, and club meetings. The records include annual review forms, blank certificates, correspondence, financial records, flyers, meeting minutes, newsletters, newspaper clippings, notebooks, and photographs. The collection includes materials documenting the preparation and sale of seed identification sets assembled by the Club as an ongoing fund-raising project. These sets (also referred to as seed mounts) consisted of crop and weed seed samples and were primarily purchased by school districts in Oregon.

The Crop Science Club Newsletter for 1965, 1967, 1969 and 1976 are included with the collection. The newsletters were published annually in the spring and include a summary of Club activities, Farm Crops Department news, lists of majors and graduates, and alumni news.

The photographs consist primarily of b/w and color prints (54 total items). Four color negatives are also included. The prints include portrait images of Crop Science students, the seed identification sets, and Club activities. The negatives depict the seed identification sets. Portrait photographs (and biographical information) for the following students are included: Hassein Ghaffari, Lewis S. Key, LeRoy Lim, William Murphy, Roy Nishimoto, Lynn Robinson, John Rossneir, Leland Schweitzer, Myron Shenk, George Tiger, Theodore Wagner, and Dean Wimer.

Biographical / Historical Notes

The Crop Science Club was established at Oregon State College in 1955. The Club provides opportunities for study and discussion of problems pertaining to technical farm crops and sponsors activities for crop science students to meet each other.
