Abstract

This collections contains three scrapbooks and a correspondence file documenting the accomplishments of the Clackamas County Jersey Cattle Club from 1944-1996. Scrapbooks include photographs, newspaper and magazine clippings, ads, circular letters, drawings and summaries of club activities.  The entire collection has been digitized and is availble upon request.

Scope and Content Notes

These scrapbooks document the activities and accomplishments of the Clackamas County Jersey Cattle Club from 1944-1946. The scrapbooks contain photographs of club activities, members and 4-H youth who raised Jersey cattle; monthly meeting announcements; newspaper and magazine clippings; ads pertaining to the farms of club members; circular letters; summaries of club activities for 1944 and 1945; and original drawings and narratives of Clackamas County homes and farms of club members, schools, and businesses. One scrapbook, compiled by club secretary Vesta Mark, won the club the national 1946 Achievement Cup sponsored by The Jersey Bulletin (magazine of the American Jersey Cattle Club). The collection also includes a 1947 Oregon City Banner-Courier newspaper clipping about the award. The entire collection has been digitized and is availble upon request.

Biographical / Historical Notes

The Clackamas County Jersey Cattle Club was organized on January 17, 1920, by Clackamas County Extension agent R.G. Scott. The purpose of the club was to promote improvement in the Jersey cattle breed through show ring exhibits, by production testing and classification. The club worked closely with the 4-H clubs and Future Farmers of America (FFA) chapters in the county. The club's officers in 1945 were George J. Horning, Jr., president; C.E. Eastman, vice-president; and Vesta Mark, secretary. The club won the national achievement award in 1920, 1942 and 1946.
