Abstract

The Douglas W. Glennie Papers consist of research records created and assembled by Glennie in his forest products chemistry research. Glennie was head of chemical research at the Forest Research Laboratory at Oregon State University from 1956 until 1964.

Scope and Content Notes

The Douglas W. Glennie Papers consist of research records created and assembled by Glennie and his colleagues in the course of their forest products chemistry research at the Forest Research Laboratory. The records consist of research reports, research notebooks, and reference and research files pertaining to specific research projects or topics. The reference files include reprints and publication, correspondence, research notes, and chemical data and analyses.

The research notebooks are for projects 3C-1, Chemistry of Douglas Fir Wood Lignin; 3C-2, Lignin Sulfonates; and 50-G, Exploratory Research in Wood Chemistry. The collection also includes research notebooks for Project 764, One- and Two-Stage High Yield Pulping of Red Alder ( Alnus rubra), conducted by E.D. Hansen and Project VII-A-1 conducted by Charles Schmokel and Glennie.

The reference files pertain the chemistry of wood lignin; wood chip transport waste; pulp liquor; and a book chapter written by Glennie on the chemistry of lignin.

Biographical / Historical Notes

Douglas W. Glennie was head of chemical research in the Forest Research Laboratory at Oregon State University from 1956 until his resignation in 1964, to accept a research position in the pulp industry. Glennie earned his BS (1949) and MA (1951) degrees from the University of British Columbia and his Ph.D. (1955) from the University of Washington. Glennie died in the state of Washington in 1971.
