The Te May Ching Papers consist of teaching and research records created and assembled by Te May Tsou Ching, professor of seed physiology at Oregon State University from 1956 to 1988. This collection documents Ching's career via correspondence; research materials including project files, laboratory notebooks, specimen photographs, and bibliographic records; teaching materials; administrative and programmatic records from the Crop Science Department; and records from her involvement in various professional activities and organizations.

Biographical / Historical Notes

Te May Ching was born January 9, 1923 in China. She enrolled in Central University in Nanjing, China in 1940, where she earned a B.S. in Forest Products and Wood Chemistry in 1944. She later immigrated to the United States, where she earned her M.S. in Wood Technology (1950) and Ph.D. in Cytology and Genetics (1954) at Michigan State University. After earning her doctorate, Ching worked as a research instructor at Michigan State. In 1956, Ching's husband, Kim, was appointed to the Oregon State Board of Forestry; Ching subsequently left her position at Michigan State University and relocated to Portland, Oregon. Later that year, Ching accepted a position as Assistant Agronomist with the Oregon State College (OSC) Farm Crops Experiment Station.

At OSC, Ching taught courses in seed physiology and conducted a wide array of research projects. In 1962, she was promoted to Associate Professor and received the rank of Professor in 1971. Ching was recognized as a leading seed physiologist, was recognized by a variety of professional organizations including the American Society of Agronomy, and published dozens of papers relating to seed treatments, storage, and germination processes, among other topics. During her tenure, she took research and teaching sabbaticals at the Wenner-Gren Institute at the University of Stockholm, Sweden; the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) in Canberra, Australia; and the Federal University of Pelotas in Pelotas, Brazil.

Ching was also deeply involved in issues of international education and international cooperation. She gave talks on the People's Republic of China to "promote mutual understanding and to improve international relationships," served as an advisor to the OSU Chinese Student Association, and was a member of the OSU International Education Committee. Ching also advised numerous graduate students, many of whom were international students.

Te May Ching was awarded Emeritus status upon her retirement from OSU in 1988.

Series 3, Professional Associations and Activities, is comprised of files documenting Ching’s affiliation with professional associations such as the American Society of Plant Pathologists, the Genetics Society of America, and the Northwest Forest Tree Seed Committee. Materials in this series also represent Ching’s on-campus professional activities, including her work with the Faculty Committee on Curricula in Agriculture, the Committee on Education for Women, and the College of Agriculture Long-range Planning group. Of particular note is folder relating to OSU’s Women in Development (WID) group, of which Ching was presumably a member. This file contains information on women working in the sciences, women in higher education, and discrimination against women in academia.

The materials in Series 4 represent Ching’s teaching, both at OSU and abroad, student advising, and completed student work. Included are course materials for Farm Crops courses (what is now Crop Science in the Department of Crop and Soil Science); copies of Master’s thesis and doctoral dissertations on which she advised; and files pertaining to “short courses” and lecture series Ching taught in China and Mexico. Of special note are the masters and doctoral proposals, which provide evidence of the contemporary concerns of seed biologists.

Series 5: Research Files, 1947-1982 Add to Shelf

Series 5 is comprised of materials documenting Te May Ching's research efforts. The series is comprised of five subseries: 1. Project Files; 2. Budget Records; 3. Grant and Project Proposals; 4. Laboratory Notebooks; and 5. Collected Publications and Bibliographic Records.

Subseries 1 includes materials both for specific projects and for more broad areas of inquiry, as indicated by Ching's own labeling and filing. The project files predominately reflect Ching's interest in seed treatments, storage, and germination. Subseries 2 is comprised of budget records documenting income from grant agencies and other sources and expenditures on equipment, samples, and personnel. Subseries 3 contains proposals submitted to grant agencies and internally to OSU administrators and outline funding, personnel, equipment, and facilities needs. The laboratory notebooks represent a large portion of Ching's research and are comprised predominately of experiment datasets, though some also include materials related to experiments conducted as part of course instruction. All laboratory notebook titles were assigned by Ching. Subseries 5 is comprised of resources, including conference proceedings, scientific papers, and reports relating to her research. Of particular note are three boxes of index cards containing bibliographic records created and assmbled by Ching.
