Biographical / Historical Notes

Margaret Cartwright Weatherford was born June 21, 1906, to James B. and Marguerite M. Newman in Portland, Oregon.  She graduated from Seaside High School and went on to study Home Economics at Oregon Agricultural College (OAC).  While at OAC she was active in Alpha Chi Omega sorority, and the campus and Corvallis theater scene.  She completed her studies in 1928.

On April 14, 1929, Margaret married James Knox Weatherford, Jr. in Seaside.  The couple made their home in Albany, Oregon.  Together, they had one daughter, Charlotte.

An avid reader, Weatehrford was a strong proponent of Albany’s Carnegie Library.  She served on the library’s board for 20 years and helped establish the “Friends of the Library” during the Second World War in order to enlarge the library’s collections and support the growing population at nearby Camp Adair.  She continued to support the library when it faced threats of closure throughout the rest of her life.

She passed away in Albany on December 5, 1999.
