Pete Smith Papers, 1983-1994

The collection includes documentation of a tour of Oregon Trail sites and a tour of bridges on the Oregon Coast designed by OSU Engineering Professor C. B. McCullough. Other documented tours are: "Hot Rocks and Other Flying Objects" (#65), "Bridges as Art, Design, and Engineering: The Career and Work of C.B. McCullough" (#55-2), "Travelling the Oregon Trail" (#68), and "The Falls of the Willamette" (#62). Led by Pete Smith and Jim Howland, the tour of "The Falls of the Willamette" consisted of a river cruise from Portland to the Willamette Locks at Oregon City as well as an exploration of Oregon City's historic homes.

Among the attractions and sites represented in these scrapbooks are Mount St. Helens, the Trojan Power Plant, the Long Beach Kite Festival, the town of Sumpter, the Tygh Valley, Whitman Mission, Ladd Canyon, the Cant Ranch near John Day, and the construction of a bridge in Waldport.

Included in the records are brochures, correspondence, maps, newspaper clippings, notes, photographs, postcards, publications, restaurant menus, and travel itineraries. Publications prepared especially for the tours, including flyers, itineraries, and tour booklets penned by alumnus Ken Munford, are also found in the collection.

Among the regions documented by these tours are: Astoria/mouth of the Columbia River, Harney County, coast range pioneer trails, The Dalles/Columbia Gorge, coastal lighthouses, and Walla Walla, Washington.
