The John C. Scharff Collection includes a transcript of a conversation between Jack Southworth and John and Florence Scharff. It also consists of awards, certificates, photographs, and letters of appreciation honoring John Scharff, an alumnus and conservationist.

Scope and Content Notes

The collection includes a transcript documenting the Scharff's home and work in eastern Oregon. The transcript is undated, but was apparently made before 1990. The collection also includes awards, certificates, photographs, and letters of appreciation honoring John C. Scharff.

An addition to the John C. Scharff Collection (Accession 2014:007) is made up of photographs depicting Scharff, J. B. Fine, and others managing cattle at the "P" Ranch and rangeland areas in Harney County. Numbering 10 images in total (6 prints and 4 negatives), the photographs document cattle branding and the operation of a squeeze chute.

Biographical / Historical Notes

Alumnus and conservationist John Scharff was a founder of the E. R. Jackman Institute (later the E. R. Jackman Foundation) and was president of its board for the first fourteen years of its existence. He was manager of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge from 1935 until his retirement in 1971. In 1971 he received Distinguished Service Awards from both OSU and the Department of the Interior. Scharff died June 11, 1998 in Burns, Oregon.
