Gerald W. Williams Prints and Postcards of Native Americans Collection consists primarily of black and white and color lithographic mounted postcards and photographic prints, some by well-known western photographers and studios. The time period ranges from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century. The images depict Native American culture in North America with a focus on the northwestern and southwestern United States, especially Alaska, Oregon, and Washington. Photographers attempted to document stereotypical aspects of Native American lives through portraits of individuals, families, and mothers with children, photographs of cultural artifacts such as totem poles, recent and ancient dwellings and ruins, canoes, and activities such as fishing, weaving baskets and blankets, and gathering huckleberries. Williams acquired the images in the course of his work as a Forest Service sociologist and historian and due to his interest in the history of Native Americans in the United States, especially that of the Pacific Northwest region.

The images in Series 5, Northwest - Washington, circa 1887-1950, and Series 4, Northwest - Oregon, circa 1940s, have been digitized and are available upon request.

Historically, "squaw" has been used as a misogynist and racist slur to disparage indigenous American women. Within this historic usage, it has been applied to place names, and scientific or colloquial names for plants. In this collection, the term "squaw" is used to refer to images of Native American women. The term is written as a caption on three postcards in the collection.

In order to provide historical context and to enable standardized searching and access across our collecctions, we have retained the use of this phrase in the collection description. We acknowledge the racism represented by this language and the harm it may cause our users. Other aspects of life are highlighted, such as the scene in Chief Shakes' House that illustrates the dedication ceremony of the Chief's new home. The Manhousett belong to the Coast Salish group, a loose organization of tribes that reside in the Pacific Northwest Coast region.

Series 4 is the most voluminous part of this collection. Subjects range from people of the Umatilla tribes and the Nez Perce to activities captured from the Pendleton Round-Up, a yearly rodeo that prides itself on the exhibition of local pastimes. This series features some postcards with correspondence such as "Memaloose Island, 1909". Celilo Falls is featured in many of photographs, because the falls were an important tribal fishing area prior to the construction of the dam and the flooding of the falls.

Eastman, Eastman's Studio (Susanville, California), Ellis, Ericson Photo (Arcata, California), Frashers Fotos Incorporated (Pomona, California), University of California Museum of Anthropology, and Zercher Post Card Company (Topeka, Kansas).

Series 7 features photographs of Modoc people prior to their displacement from their native lands in northern California. "Ishi, Last of the Southern Yana" represents the Yana, a now extinct group that resided in Northern California and the Central High Sierras.. A particularly sentimental offering is "Snug as a bug in a rug" at Bay View Resort, 1904-1950. Other items of interest display rock formations and lava beds.
