Abstract

The John H. Gallagher, Sr. Photograph Collection primarily consists of prints, negatives and cartes de visite documenting life near the turn of the twentieth century in Corvallis and elsewhere around Oregon. The collection also includes a series of photographs taken during ceremonies marking the transformation of Oregon State College to Oregon State University in 1961.

Scope and Content Notes

The collection includes a number of images documenting day-to-day life in Oregon during the late 1800s and early 1900s. While most of the images are set in the Corvallis area, images taken in Clatskanie and Arlington, Oregon are also included. The collection also features a series of photographs taken in 1961 and depicting University President August L. Strand, Governor Mark O. Hatfield and others participating in ceremonies marking the transformation of Oregon State College into Oregon State University.

Certain images were either photographed or collected by Jim Strange of Otis, Oregon.

Biographical / Historical Notes

John Hubert Gallagher, Sr., was born 8 August 1875 in Carlton (Yamhill County), Oregon. He entered Oregon Agricultural College in 1895, but interrupted his education in May 1898 to enlist with the 2nd Oregon U.S. Volunteers and fight in the Philippines during the Spanish American War. Gallagher re-entered OAC in the Fall of 1899 and graduated in engineering in 1900.

Gallagher was the first secretary of the Alumni Association; served on the Board of Directors for many years; and was founder and executive secretary of the Golden Jubilee Association. He was active in the business and civic life of Corvallis; organized and managed the Corvallis Sand and Gravel Company; and was a consulting engineer for many Portland buildings and the Bonneville Dam. Gallagher died 16 May 1961 in Corvallis.
