Abstract

The John B. Alexander Sr. Photograph Collection consists primarily of images of buildings on the Oregon Agricultural College campus taken near the turn of the century and the early 1920s.

Images from this collection have been digitized and are available in Oregon Digital.

Scope and Content Notes

The collection includes eight 3.5" x 3.25" prints of buildings including a photo of Mechanical Hall after it was destroyed by fire in 1898. The collection also includes nineteen 2.5" x 1.5" reprints of images printed on card stock, most of which depict images of OAC buildings ca. the 1920s.

Biographical / Historical Notes

John B. Alexander Sr. is believed to have been John Billings Alexander, an OAC student in the early 1920s who served as President of the Associated Students of OAC during the 1922-1923 school year. Following his graduation, Alexander enjoyed a career as a construction and hydraulic engineer, working for the United States Army Corps of Engineers. As a result of his occupation, Alexander traveled widely both within the United States and abroad, at various points working in Mexico and Afghanistan.

His son, John Brockett Alexander, also attended Oregon State College, graduating in 1949 with a degree in Business.
