The George H. Arscott papers were generated and assembled by Arscott and document his poultry science research. The Papers consist of articles, conference papers, publications, reports, and studies; Arscott's thesis and dissertation; research project records; newspaper clippings; correspondence; and photographs.
The articles and conference papers include abstracts of published articles and conference papers written by Arscott; article reprints; a list of Arscott's publications; and reprints from Oregon's Agricultural Progress. The publications include Historical Review: The Feed-Mixing Facility of the Department of Poultry Science (1966); Extension Service and Experiment Station publications from the 1950s-1980s; the Oregon Poultry Extension Newsletter for 1974-1988; and materials from the Poultry Science Association conference held at Oregon State University in 1987. The reports include materials documenting the 1991 induction of James Dryden into the Agricultural Hall of Fame.
The collection includes Arscott's M.S. thesis, Studies on Vitamin B12 and Unidentified Factors with Hens and Chicks Fed Practical-Type Rations (1950) and Ph.D. dissertation, Unidentified Chick Growth and Hatchability Factors in Poultry Nutrition (1953), which were both completed at the University of Maryland.
The research project records document Arscott's role as a volunteer researcher with the International Executive Service Corps (IESC) and the Agricultural Cooperative Development International/Volunteers in Overseas Cooperative Assistance (ACDI-VOCA) on projects in Peru, Lithuania, and Egypt during the mid-1990s.
The correspondence documents communications between Arscott and the OSU Foundation regarding the donation of Arscott's poultry science journals at the time of his retirement. One of the recipients of Arscott's journals was the OSU Faculty Agriculture Project at Sana University in Yemen.
The photographs consist of 11 unique images documenting Arscott's poultry research; these are labeled with the identifiers P124:01 - P124:11. One 4x5 negative is included for each image and one contact print for each image. Multiple prints are included for two of the images (P 124:08 and P124:11). The photographs were taken looking downward at the backs of individual chickens on bedding. The photographs are undated, but were probably made in the 1950s or early 1960s.
More Extent Information: 25 photographs; 2 boxes
Statement on Access: Collection is open for research.
Acquisition Note: The materials in the collection were donated to the University Archives and the Special Collection and Archives Research Center in several transfers from 2000 through 2014. The photographs were likely received by the University Archives in the 1960s as a separate collection, the George H. Arscott Photograph Collection (P 124); in 2009, the photographs were incorporated into the Arscott Papers.
Related Materials:
Two oral history interviews with Arscott were conducted in 2014 as part of the Oregon State University Sesquicentennial Oral History Project (OH 026). The Poultry Science Department Records (RG 182) and the Poultry Science Department Photograph Collection (P 111) provide extensive documentation of poultry science research, extension, and academic programs at Oregon State University.
The Special Collections and Archives Research Center holds the papers of several other poultry science faculty including the Paul E. Bernier Papers (MSS Bernier), James A. Harper Papers (MSS HarperJ), and the Harry S. Nakaue Papers (MSS Nakaue) as well as the Oregon Poultry Council Records (MSS OPC), the Oregon Poultry Industries Association Records (MSS OPIA), and the Oregon Fryer Commission (MSS OFC).
