Abstract

The Harold L. Manley Collection consists of lecture notes and problem sets from mathematics and engineering classes as well as several mathematics and engineering textbooks.  Manley graduated from Oregon State College in 1940 with a BS degree in Civil Engineering.

Scope and Content Notes

The Harold L. Manley Collection consists of lecture notes and problem sets from mathematics and engineering classes that Manley took at Oregon State College in 1939-1940 as well as several mathematics and engineering textbooks. Of particular interest are lecture notes from a numerical calculus class taught by W.E. Milne and a 1949 numerical calculus textbook by Milne.

In addition to the numerical calculus lecture notes, the collection includes problems in differential equations and statically indeterminate structures.  The textbooks include Numerical Calculus: Approximations, Interpolation, Finite Differences, Numerical Integration, and Curve Fitting by W.E. Milne (1949); Elementary Differential Equations by Lyman M. Kells (1935); Strain Energy Methods of Stress Analysis by A.J. Sutton Pippard (1928); Theory of Elasticity by S. Timoshenko (1934); and Elements of the Differential and Integral Calculus by W.A. Granville (1911).

Biographical / Historical Notes

Alumnus Harold L. (Hal) Manley entered Oregon State College in January 1938 and graduated in June 1940 with a BS degree in Civil Engineering. He worked briefly for the National Bureau of Standards after graduation and served in the US Marine Corps from 1942 to 1946. In 1946, he became a State Registered Civil Engineer in California; shortly thereafter he began working for the Department of Building and Safety of the City of Los Angeles where he remained until his retirement in 1975.
