Abstract

The Lory Johnston Papers reflect Johnston's student experience at Oregon State College and in particular, his involvement in the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity.

Scope and Content Notes

The Johnston Papers include photographs, dance cards, event programs, newsletters, a newspaper, registration receipts, a sign, a student directory, student handbooks, and ticket stubs. These items document Johnston's social activities at OSC relating primarily to his participation in dances and athletic games.

Numbering 27 prints in total, the images mostly depict Johnston as a part of group shots with his fellow Phi Gamma Delta brothers and at dances with other attendees. There are also a few portrait shots of alumna Jean Hathaway, including one with her and Johnston.

Biographical / Historical Notes

Born in California and raised in the midwest and Florida, Lory Maurice Johnston studied business at OSC from 1947 to 1950. After college, Johnston went on to serve in the U.S. Navy as a pilot during the Korean War. Back in the states, Johnston helped his father Wilson manage the Elbo Room Bar and Sea Breeze Restaurant in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The bar was a longtime family business and Lory inherited it from Wilson in the late 1950s. Johnston also managed other business in the area such as Trader Jack's and Maori Village. He died in 2006.
