Abstract

The Oregon Vocational Agriculture Teacher's Association Newsletters consist of the organization's newsletter, Old Yeller, written by and for agriculture teachers in Oregon high schools and community colleges. David Raynalds, who earned a M.Ed. in Agricultural Education from Oregon State University, contributed a regular column, "Tex Talks", to the newsletter.

Scope and Content Notes

The Oregon Vocational Agriculture Teacher's Association Newsletters consist of issues of the Association's newsletter, Old Yeller, from September 1959 through January 1970. Old Yeller was written and edited by and for agriculture teachers in Oregon high schools and community colleges. The newsletter was published monthly during the school year and included editorials, letters to the editor, news from the organization's officers, announcements of upcoming events, and reports from national and regional conferences. The "Tex Talks" column was written by Dave "Tex" Raynalds until 1964; Raynald's column addressed agricultural and other topics from the perspective of a high school classroom teacher. Many issues include an update from the Oregon State University Department of Agricultural Education. Beginning in 1962, the newsletter was published by the Oregon Education Association.

Biographical / Historical Notes

The Oregon Vocational Agriculture Teacher's Association (OVATA) is an organization of agricultural education teachers in Oregon secondary schools. OVATA works closely with six other educational programs in Oregon -- Oregon Future Farmers of American (FFA), Oregon FFA Alumni, Oregon Department of Education, Oregon Community Colleges, Collegiate FFA, and Oregon State University -- in an informal association known as Team Ag Ed.

David Raynalds earned a M.Ed. in Agricultural Education from Oregon State University in 1967 with a thesis titled "Preparation of Vocational-Technical Teachers in Selected Community Colleges"; he initially enrolled as a graduate student at Oregon State College in 1952 and complete courses toward his graduate degree during several summer sessions in the 1960s. Raynalds taught agriculture at Stanfield (Oregon) High School for many years and served as head of the Agriculture Department and night school at Blue Mountain Community College in Pendleton, Oregon beginning in about 1965. A native of Texas, Raynalds graduated from Texas Technological College with a B.S. in 1948. Raynalds wrote the "Tex Talks" column for the OVATA newsletter, Old Yeller, until about 1964. David Raynalds died in September 1970.
