Abstract
The Wetlands Inventory and Survey Maps document the National Wetlands Inventory as conducted in the western United States and the central Willamette Valley and Pacific Coast in Oregon by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Office of Biological Services. The collection includes an atlas of state and local wetlands surveys that had been conducted in 1965-1975 as well as drafts of wetlands inventory maps documenting the type and extent of coastal and inland wetlands in Oregon.
Scope and Content Notes
The Wetlands Inventory and Survey Maps document the National Wetlands Inventory as conducted in the western United States and the central Willamette Valley and Pacific Coast in Oregon. The collection includes two atlases. One atlas depicts the extent of state and local wetlands surveys that had been conducted in 1965-1975. The second atlas shows the types and coverage of aerial photography available for conducting wetlands surveys and inventories. Drafts of wetlands inventory maps for the area from the central Willamette Valley to the coast comprise about half of the collection. These maps document the type and extent of coastal and inland wetlands following the Cowardin Classification System developed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in 1979. The Cowardin system is a hierarchical classification consisting of the major wetlands classes of marine, estuarine, riverine, lacustrine, and palustrine. Details on water flow, substrate, vegetation, flooding, and salinity define subclassifications within the major classes. The maps were prepared primarily by stereoscopic analysis of high-altitude aerial photographs; wetlands were identified based on vegetation, visible hydrology, and geography. Selected sites were examined in the field. All of the maps are blueline prints.

Box and Folder Listing
- Series 1: Atlases, circa 1976
- Series I consists of two atlases that were prepared to support the National Wetlands Inventory. One atlas shows existing state and local wetlands surveys that had been conducted in 1965-1975. The second atlas shows the type of aerial photography available for conducting wetlands surveys and inventories. These two atlases are for U.S Fish and Wildlife Service Region 1 and cover California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington. Each atlas consists of 10 maps, with one map for Hawaii, Oregon, and Washington and 2-3 maps for each of the other states. The maps are at a scale of 1:750,000.
- Extent: 20 maps
- Folder-Item 1.1: Existing State and Local Wetlands Surveys (1965-1975) Volume 1 Atlas
- Prepared by the U.S. Department of Interior, Fish and Wildlife Service, Office of Biological Services.
- Folder-Item 1.2: Index of Selected Aerial Photography of the United States Prepared for the National Wetland Inventory
- Prepared by the U.S. Department of Interior, Fish and Wildlife Service.
- Series 2: National Wetlands Inventory Maps, 1990
- Series II consists of drafts of wetlands inventory maps prepared by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Office of Biological Services. The maps depict the area from the central Willamette Valley near Corvallis and Albany, Oregon, west to the Newport area of the Oregon coast. Most of the base maps are 1:24,000 U.S. Geological Survey topographic quadrangles. Several of the sheets have a 1:62,500 base map (Alsea, Marys Peak, Monroe, Tidewater, and Yaquina). A few of the sheets are undated, but were prepared during the same time-frame as other sheets in the series. The maps provide information on the type and extent of coastal and inland wetlands following the Cowardin Classification System developed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in 1979. The maps depict marine, estuarine, riverine, lacustrine, and palustrine wetlands based primarily on analysis of high-altitude aerial photographs. The maps are blueline prints and include two overlays.
