Abstract

The Esther Mears Collection consists of materials related to Mears' life as a student from elementary school to her freshman year at Oregon State College in 1930-1931.

Scope and Content Notes

This collection includes Oregon State College-related items ca. early 1930s: schedules of classes, a campus map, an OSC/YWCA newsletter, a student handbook, a football schedule, receipts for quarterly membership in OSC Associated Students and pamphlets pertaining to freshman orientation. Non-OSC items in this collection primarily consist of Mears' elementary and high school report cards.

Biographical / Historical Notes

Esther Maria Mears was born April 24, 1910 in Crawford, Washington, to Charles Stockdale and Bertie Leon Mears.  She graduated from Raymond High School in 1928.

In 1930, she matriculated at Oregon State College (OAC) as a two year Home Economics student.  She completed one year of classes.  While at OAC she was a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho (AGR) Sorority.  After leaving Oregon State, she worked for a time as a seamstress to support herself.

In November 1946, she married Willard Burton Coons in San Jose, California.

Esther Mears Coons died in 1997 in Monterrey, California.
