Abstract

The James G. Arbuthnot Photograph Collection contains images produced or collected by Arbuthnot during his time at Oregon Agricultural College (OAC). These images document Arbuthnot's life and activities in and near Corvallis as well as OAC's athletic teams and sporting events. Arbuthnot was Athletic Director from 1906 to 1918 and the coach of the OAC wrestling team in 1911-1917 and 1920.

Images from this collection have been digitized and are available in Oregon Digital.

Scope and Content Notes

The James G. Arbuthnot Photograph Collection contains images that document two main subjects: Arbuthnot's personal activities and athletics at Oregon Agricultural College. The majority of the images appear to have been produced around 1910-during Arbuthnot's time as the Athletic Director of the College. The collection contains many views of mountain landscapes, forests, rivers, and the Oregon coast. The photographs depict Arbuthnot and other individuals hiking and exploring, diving into and swimming in the Marys River, taking canoeing and boating trips on the Willamette and Columbia Rivers, visiting Marys River Dam, setting off on hunting trips, posing with fish and game (living and dead), discovering ship wreckage on the coast, and climbing on "Jump Off Joe" near Yaquina Bay. A large number of the images show Arbuthnot's dog, who accompanied him on many of his trips and appears in many photographs with the wrestling team.

The collection also includes images taken in Corvallis and on the OAC campus. These photographs depict a number of athletic teams including football, baseball, basketball, track and field, and wrestling participating in practices, games, and competitions. Some of these photographs are included in the Orange yearbook. Individual players are also pictured. There are a number of images of cadet companies participating in military drills on Inspection Day as well as views of the college gymnasium-which would later become Mitchell Playhouse. The majority of images in this collection are postcard prints.

Images from this collection have been digitized and are available in Oregon Digital.

Biographical / Historical Notes

James George Arbuthnot was born on December 31, 1883 in Nebraska. He came to Oregon Agricultural College in 1906 to serve as Athletic Director, a post he held until 1918. During this time, Arbuthnot was also the coach of the OAC wrestling team (1911-1917, 1920). Although Arbuthnot had only wrestled for exhibitions and had never participated in a meet, the team, under his guidance, held a 10-3-3 record and achieved five conference titles. Throughout the program's history, the Oregon State wrestling team has been conference champions 49 times.

From 1921-1929, Arbuthnot was head coach of the University of Washington wrestling team. For ten of the twelve years between 1919 and 1930, he was also the tennis coach.

James Arbuthnot married Harriet Carrie on December 28, 1912. He died December 2, 1964 in Placer, California.
