The Forestry Media Center Slide Collection consists of color slides created, assembled, and maintained by the Forestry Media Center as a source of images for instruction and outreach, primarily by the College of Forestry. The slides are organized by subject and location and the general subjects are assigned file numbers. The images document forests in North America; timber management, harvesting, and processing; logging systems; tree diseases and insect damage; forest products research; ecology and wildlife; College of Forestry field trips and workshops; soil types and soil erosion; streams, rivers, and lakes; riparian and hydrology research; dendrology; resource recreation management; and nurseries and reforestation. Images of the Forestry Media Center including staff, logos and graphics, audio-visual equipment, production facilities, and the Self Learning Center are also included.
The McCulloch Slide Files comprise about a third of the collection. These images may have been created and/or assembled by W.F. McCulloch in the course of his teaching, research, and administrative activities. These slides are primarily arranged by location and document various natural and urban landscapes throughout the United States as well as Canada, Japan, and Russia -- primarily during the 1950s and 1960s -- as well as lumber mills and wood processing facilities. The McCulloch slides include images of Native American sites, especially in the southwestern United States. Photographs taken in Alaska, British Columbia, California, Idaho, Montana, and Washington as well as Oregon are part of the McCulloch slides.
