Scope and Content Notes

The Carol Andrews Papers were generated and assembled by Andrews in the course of her work on website design and construction for Oregon State University as an employee of the Office of University Relations. The Papers consist of correspondence, certificates, greeting cards, meeting minutes, newspaper clippings, notebooks, position descriptions, and status reports. The files primarily reflect Andrews' interaction with various Oregon State departments and colleges in the development of websites. In addition to correspondence and printed copies of the finished web pages, these records also include initial drafts of the sites, notes, reference materials, and examples of the source coding. Among these projects is the first Oregon State University web page, which was launched in 1995. The collection's notebooks and status reports track various projects and contain notations about meetings, tasks, priorities, time spent, progress made, and ideas. Andrews' role as an instructor in web development through cooperative learning groups is also reflected in these records as well as her participation on university committees such as the Web Advisory Group.

Biographical / Historical Notes

Carol Andrews was hired by the Oregon State University (OSU) Office of University Relations in 1990 in a clerical, administrative-support position. She began using e-mail and other electronic means for dissemination of information in that position in the early 1990s, which established the foundation for Oregon State's online presence. In the mid-1990s, she became the Web Communications Coordinator in University Publications. In addition to pioneering the use of electronic mail distribution and the Gopher system to create the first modern listserv at OSU, Andrews helped to build OSU's first web page in 1995. Andrews was instrumental in web development training of campus staff and managed the online version of university publications such as the course catalog and schedule of classes. In 2001, Andrews was honored with the Professional Faculty Leadership Association "Our Heroes" award. Following her retirement in 2011, Andrews continued to serve as Web Communications Coordinator for University Relations on a part-time basis.
